Fully refurbished in 2025, Moon Beach Resort is an idyllic surf resort catering to all types of surfers, tucked away on the West Coast of Simeulue Island in the Aceh province of North Sumatra, Indonesia. Australian-managed since the early 2000’s, surfers and non-surfers can enjoy everything Moon Beach Resort has to offer, from speak fishing, to waterfall trekks, and of course surfing plenty of uncrowded waves like Dylan’s, the Peak, Tea Bags and more.

Surfing in Simeulue needs no introduction, as one of the emptiest, yet most consistent regions in Indonesia. For years surfers looking for empty lineups and wave perfection have been travelling to this area and they’re never disappointed.

Accommodation

Moon Beach is a surf trip destination of choice for surfers who are looking for seclusion, privacy and a place to relax and recharge in a beautiful location, untouched by crowds. This Simeulue surf resort sleeps a maximum of 13 surfers in 4 villas throughout the property, and features a swimming pool with sun loungers for chill sessions in between surfs.

Coconuts Villa derives its name from being built entirely from coconut wood, nestled amongst tall coconut trees surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens.

It has stunning ocean views and a private ensuite, along with air-conditioning, 240V power, a mini bar fridge, lounge space, filtered water dispenser, and a private balcony. It sleeps up to 3 people, perfect for mates, couples, triple share, or solo travellers.

Beach Almond Villa is right on the beach overlooking the pristine Lantik Bay and nearby islands. It features two bedrooms with a separate lounge room, ensuite bathroom, and a spacious outdoor deck. It sleeps up to 5 people and is perfect for large groups or families.

Tree Tops Villa is located on the second floor, nestled amongst the tree tops with ocean and pool views. It is a twin-share villa great for mates or solo surfers. It has a large private balcony and workspace.

Castaways Villa is a ground-floor villa surrounded by beautiful gardens. It is a twin-share, double or triple-share villa with a large undercover patio located next to the pool.

Surfing Simeulue

With more than a dozen epic surf breaks around Moon Beach Resort, surfing on Simeulue Island has never looked so good. Primely positioned central to breaks like Dylan’s, Tea Bags and the Peak, you’ll find the waves you’re looking for from Moon Beach Resort, all within a short walk, scooter ride, car trip or via boat.

Simeulue Island is located in the Doldrums, which means more often that not there’s no wind, resulting in clean, glassy conditions the majority of the time. Unlike other regions in Indonesia, this area doesn’t rely on southern swells, instead utilising the swells from the north west around India and the Maldives. Swells in this region have longer periods, longer lines and barrels.

Moon Beach Resort features a unique dining and entertainment area, located on the beachfront. The friendly restaurant staff go above and beyond to create delicious and nutricious meals for guests, sourcing local ingredients from surrounding villages or the gardens within the property.

For breakfast, enjoy fresh juices, fruit platters, toast and eggs plus a selection of Indonesian dishes such as fried rice, noodles and banana pancakes. Tea and coffee is also readily available all morning and throughout the day.

At lunch time, expect a variety of Western and Indonesian inspired cuisines like woodfired pizzas, chicken salads, burgers, nasi goreng and stir fry noodles.

Evening meals are served as the sun goes down, with a range of curries, seafood platters, woodfired pizzas and traditional Indonesian dishes on offer.

There’s more to do than just surfing on this beautiful Indonesian island, all within an hour of Moon Beach Resort. Surfers and non-surfers can enjoy a variety of activities on Simeulue Island, such as world class reefs for snorkelling, fishing and diving.
