G-Land Joyo’s Surf Camp

Welcome to G-Land, also known as Grajagan, a mecca for travelling surfers and adventure seekers alike and home to one of the world’s best left-hand surf breaks. This legendary surf spot is located at Plengkung Bay, on the southernmost peninsula of Java, and was first discovered by a couple of intrepid surfers in the 70s during a flight between Jakarta and Bali.

So close to Bali, but yet so far, Joyo’s Surf Camp is the ultimate haven for an unforgettable surf adventure. It’s an all-inclusive surf destination set in the remote Javanese jungle that attracts surfers from all over the world, as well as their non-surfing families and friends.

Joyo’s Surf Camp was built in the 1990s and was one of the first surf camps in G-Land. It offers comfortable cottage-style accommodation that features private bathrooms, twin beds, mosquito nets and beautiful Balinese furniture. This Indonesian surf camp caters to surfers and non-surfers, with a simple jungle-style living experience that ticks all the boxes.

Surfing G-Land

G-Land is a swell magnet and arguably the world’s best left-hander. G-Land Joyo’s Surf Camp is situated in the Alas Purwo National Park, which is open from March to October during the peak surf season.

This incredible surf camp was built right in the jungle, just off the beach, and is located directly in front of the famous section of G-Land reef known as Speedies. During the peak surf season, the swell is super consistent and you’re almost guaranteed to get waves. With the help of Joyo’s Surf Camp’s experienced Australian surf guides, your only worry will be which board to surf when the waves are pumping.

How to Get to G-Land

Travelling to G-Land is easy. The minibus driver will pick you up from your hotel in Bali just after midnight. From there, it’s an overnight drive to Gilimanuk and a car ferry to Grajagan.  Next is a 45-minute speedboat ride, arriving at Jungle Beach Village in the early morning for breakfast.  Return transfers from Bali are included in the package price.

The owners of Joyo’s Surf Camp have been affiliated with surf camps for more than 20 years and have made sure the accommodation options at Joyo’s cater to a range of preferences.

Surf G-Land Joyo’s Surf Camp

Known as one of the best and most powerful left-handers in the world, G-Land is the number one attraction at Joyo’s Surf Camp. This wave is suited to intermediate surfers and has three main sections, depending on the tide and swell. G-Land performs best in southerly swells and wind from the southeast to northwest, depending on the time of year.

The outside reef section, Kongs is surfable at low tide up to the limits of your courage! This wave connects with Moneytrees on huge swells.

This is the prime take-off point for G-Land. From this section, the wave lifts at an inside peak called Launching Pads, then reaches top speed and its climax on an inside wedge and long-running section that has been appropriately named Speedies. It’s this shallow Speedies section that has produced some of the most insane adrenaline-pumping barrel rides yet.

Other Breaks

There are a couple of other novelty breaks at G-Land, including Chickens, 20/20s and a nice right-hander named Tiger Trails, which is popular with natural footers and a nice change from the more intimidating main break.

Non-Surf Activities

The lush jungle landscape and pristine waters around G-Land Joyo’s Surf Camp are perfect for other activities besides surfing. Grab a snorkel and goggles to explore the water, take off on a jungle trek or try and catch dinner on one of the camp’s fishing trips.
