North Malé Atolls
Surf Guide
World Surfaris’ Overview
The North Malé Atoll is the most surf-rich and accessible region in the Maldives, known for its consistent swell exposure, variety of high-performance reef breaks, and proximity to Velana International Airport. This convenience makes it a top choice for both surf charters, which often begin and end here, and land-based surf trips. World-class waves like Sultans, Jailbreaks and Honky’s are all within easy reach by boat, offering long, rippable walls ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers.
A standout in this region is Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort, home to the famed Lohis Left, a long, reliable left-hander that breaks just steps from the resort. With exclusive access to the wave for in-house guests, a strictly managed surfer cap to limit crowds, as well as daily boat transfers to surrounding breaks, Hudhuranfushi offers one of the most convenient and surf-focused resort stays in the Maldives.

Surf Seasons
Early Season (February – April)
This period offers clean, user-friendly waves and is ideal for intermediate surfers, longboarders, or those travelling with non-surfers. February and March bring small, mellow surf with light winds and clear skies. April sees the first consistent swells of the season, delivering fun, rippable 2–4ft walls and fewer crowds in the lineup.
Peak Season (May – September)
Driven by strong Indian Ocean swells, this is the most consistent and powerful surf window. Expect regular 4–6ft sets at Lohis, with nearby breaks like Cokes and Jailbreaks offering heavier, more advanced waves. While wind and storm activity can increase, the variety of breaks ensures good options across most days.
Late Season (October – January)
October and November offer clean, fun-sized waves with reduced crowds – ideal for intermediate surfers chasing laid-back sessions. Swell tapers off into December and January, but postcard-perfect weather makes it a great time for a relaxed trip with occasional waves at Lohis and surrounding breaks if the conditions lineup.

Wave Breakdown
The North Malé Atolls are known for their high wave density and variety, offering something for almost every surf style and skill level. With a mix of long, rippable walls, hollow barrels and more mellow, user-friendly options, surfers can access multiple world-class reef breaks within a short boat ride of each other.
Lohis Left
Lohis is the crown jewel of the North Malé Atolls. A peeling left-hander that breaks right off Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort, it’s well-known as one of the most consistent waves in the Maldives.Expect a deep, barrelling pit and rippable wall, or pick off the wider sets and enjoy a freight train ride all the way to the end section. In bigger swells, Lohis is more suitable to intermediate-advanced surfers. In smaller swells or during the low season, Lohis is perfect for all levels, including advanced beginners.
Ninjas
Right across the channel from Lohis, visible from the Lohis Deck, is Ninjas. This is a fun right-hander for beginner to intermediate surfers, depending on the conditions. With an easier take-off, Ninjas is good for both short boarders and longboarders alike.
Honkeys
A little further South of Ninjas located off the uninhabited Thanburudhoo Island, Honkeys is a super fun left-hander with a mellow take-off and long, rippable wall. This wave doesn’t always turn it on, but when it does, the Lohis surf guides ensure guests are there first!
Sultans
The mirror wave of Honkeys, Sultans is one of the most consistent and user-friendly right-handers in the world. With long walls and barrel sections, Sultans has plenty of take-off spots, so crowds are rarely an issue.
Jails
Jailbreaks is a long right-hander with three distinct sections, including a barrel section. Similarly to Sultans and Honkeys, it rarely feels crowded at this wave. When it lines up right, expect a super fun 300m ride! This wave is located across the channel from Honkeys and Sultans.
Cokes
Heading north of Lohis, you’ll find one of the most renowned waves in the Maldives, Cokes (also known as Colas). This wave is a hollow right-hander that delivers powerful waves between 3ft and 10ft. Breaking over shallow reef, it’s most ideal for experienced surfers.
Chickens
Across the channel from Cokes, Chickens is the fastest left-hander in the North Malé Atolls. It’s a swell magnet and can handle swell from 3ft to over 10ft, with rides up to 500m long on it’s day.
