Surfing Lohis & Beyond

With Lohis Left peeling just metres from your villa at Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort, many surfers are more than happy to settle into the rhythm of surfing this world-class left day after day. But for those chasing variety and a taste of adventure, the North Malé Atolls deliver plenty of options just a short boat ride away.

From the playful walls of Jailbreaks and Ninjas to the hollow perfection of Honkeys, Sultans, Cokes and Chickens, the region offers an incredible mix of waves for every level – whether you’re after fun, user-friendly walls or heavy, barreling reef breaks.

Ninjas

Right across the channel from Lohis, visible from the Lohis Deck, is Ninjas. This is a fun right-hander for beginner to intermediate surfers, depending on the conditions. With an easier take-off, Ninjas is good for both short boarders and longboarders alike.

Distance from Lohis: 2 minutes

Honkeys

A little further South of Ninjas located off the uninhabited Thanburudhoo Island, Honkeys is a super fun left-hander with a mellow take-off and long, rippable wall. This wave doesn’t always turn it on, but when it does, the Lohis surf guides ensure guests are there first!

Distance from Lohis: 15 minutes

Sultans

The mirror wave of Honkeys, Sultans is one of the most consistent and user-friendly right-handers in the world. With long walls and barrel sections, Sultans has plenty of take-off spots, so crowds are rarely an issue.

Distance from Lohis: 15 minutes

Jails

Jailbreaks is a long right-hander with three distinct sections, including a barrel section. Similarly to Sultans and Honkeys, it rarely feels crowded at this wave. When it lines up right, expect a super fun 300m ride! This wave is located across the channel from Honkeys and Sultans.

Distance from Lohis: 25 minutes

Cokes

Heading north of Lohis, you’ll find one of the most renowned waves in the Maldives, Cokes (also known as Colas). This wave is a hollow right-hander that delivers powerful waves between 3ft and 10ft. Breaking over shallow reef, it’s most ideal for experienced surfers.

Distance from Lohis: 20 minutes

Chickens

Across the channel from Cokes, Chickens is the fastest left-hander in the North Malé Atolls. It’s a swell magnet and can handle swell from 3ft to over 10ft, with rides up to 500m long on it’s day.

Surf Transfers & Access

Surf transfers at Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort run twice daily on traditional Maldivian dhonis, included in your World Surfaris package. Once a dhoni departs the resort, you’ll generally be out for 3–4 hours, with your on-site surf guides choosing the best waves for the conditions and coordinating morning and afternoon departures. To make the most of your trip, we recommend bringing a towel and dry clothes, an extra bottle of water, a few snacks, and back-up surf gear such as wax or a spare leash.

Each dhoni is equipped with shade, cold water, a surf guide and snorkelling gear, and non-surfing partners or family are welcome to join to enjoy the scenery, swim stops and marine life. Guests are dispersed among a variety of breaks to suit different skill levels, which not only ensures everyone finds their perfect wave but also helps manage crowds back at Lohis.

Combined with the resort’s strict surfer cap, this means there are very rarely more than 10 surfers in the lineup at any one time.

The Dream Surf Trip

Whether you’re content surfing Lohis on repeat or keen to explore the surrounding breaks, Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort offers the perfect balance of world-class waves, expert guiding and relaxed island living. With capped surfer numbers and easy access to the best of the North Malé Atolls, it’s a surf trip that delivers consistency, variety and the kind of memories that keep you coming back year after year.
