When To Go: A Surf Season Breakdown

Known as one of the most consistent waves in the Maldives, Lohis Left is suited to almost all levels, from advanced-beginners to seasoned, experienced surfers. In saying this, it of course all comes down to the season, and conditions on the day.

Whether you’ve got a flexible schedule and can’t decide when to book your trip, or whether you’re relying on specific conditions to match your skill level, here’s what you can typically expect each month based on past season averages.

Early Season

Febuary & March

Best for: Clear skies, light winds and mellow conditions for all levels.

For surfers traveling with non-surfing friends or family, this time of the year can offer the most consistent weather. Think crystal clear blues, balmy sunsets and light winds.

It’s considered early season when it comes to the surf, so if you’re simply looking to fit in a daily session amongst all the family fun, Febuary and March should definetely be on your radar.

Plus, with far less advanced-level surfers around during this time, beginners, longboarders and intermediate-level surfers can take advantage of increased wave count to hone in on their skills in a safe, laid-back environment.

April, May & June

Best for: Fun-sized waves and pleasant weather.

Perfect for intermediate to advanced-level surfers, the surf season transition months of April, May and June are renowed for fun-sized waves with the occasional bigger day.

The chances of tropical storms and wet weather can increase from mid-May to early July, however, with no significant landmass in the Maldives storms tend to pass through very quickly (sometimes within the hour!).

April and May tend to book out almost a year in advance, so if crowd factor is important to you, perhaps consider March or June instead.

Peak Season

July, August & September

Best for: Experienced surfers chasing big, heavy swells.

For bigger swells, consider July, August or September. Coinciding with stronger winds and tropical storm activity, expect to see solid 6ft Lohis and 8ft Cokes during these months.

Generally, these swell events will pop up consistently throughout and last between 2 and 4 days, turning Lohis and surrounding breaks from rippable and fun to solid and pumping.

In saying this, with 6 other waves nearby all accessible from the resort, intermediate-level surfers can generally find something suited to their skill level even during peak swell periods. Jailbreaks for example, is the go-to spot for fun, mellow waves when Lohis is overhead and pumping.

Given the demand from seasoned surfers and repeat guests, these peak season months are generally more expensive than low season or transition months like March, April and November.

Late Season

October & November

Best for: Mellow waves for all levels and less crowds.

A combination of March’s pristine weather and April’s fun-sized swell, October and November can deliver perfect, clean waves ranging from 2ft to 3ft with the odd bigger day.

Most surfers have got their fix by now, whether it was back in April or May or during the peak swell months, leaving October and November far less crowded.

December & January

Best for: Perfect Maldives weather with the odd surf session possible.

The surf in December and January can be slightly less consistent than Febuary and March. However, if you’re traveling with family or non-surfing friends and the surfing element of your holiday is not necessarily the focus, this is the post-card perfect time to visit the Maldives.

Onshore winds can be common from December through to Febuary, however, there can be moments of perfect winds and swell for the lucky surfer.
