A How-To Guide: Choosing your next surf charter.

22nd May 2024

We’ve compiled some handy hot tips, travel hacks and industry secrets when it comes to choosing the perfect surf charter. So if you’re busy plotting your next surf trip, this one’s worth a read!

You’ve woken up in the tropics, the chef is whipping up breakfast pancakes, and you peer out the window to a perfect, empty lineup. You finally made that surf trip happen, and life is good. Was it an absolute process in the lead up? Probably…

From rounding up a group of mates, to choosing a boat and surf region, it can be an overwhelming process planning a surf charter. During the research phase, it may seem like much of a muchness when comparing boats or regions, but trust us when we say it’s not – especially when you’re stuck on the thing for 12 days in the middle of nowhere.

1

Know your budget.

Prices for surf charters can vary depending on a few things:

  • Seasonaility (standard rates generally apply during peak-season, and deals will come during low season).
  • The characteristics of the boat, such as the size, layout, accomodation type and other features like AC, entertainment options and onboard equipment.
  • Group numbers (the fuller the group, the better the rate).
  • Package inclusions like alcohol, transfers, internet and surf photography.
  • Surf region, particularly when comparing the Maldives to Indonesia.

These elements are important considerations when selecting the perfect boat, alongside World Surfaris’ non-negotiables like crew expertise, safety, and good (and plentiful) food!

For a simple, budget-friendly boat, expect to cough up around $3,000 AUD per surfer. For a larger, more premium boat, anywhere from $4,400 AUD per surfer is standard. To read more on our Trip Types, click here.

Hot Tip: Got high expectations on a low budget?

The Maldives could be the way to go, offering great value for money when it comes to privacy, comfort and spaciousness.

The details matter.

Sometimes the little things make all the difference while on charter. Are there individual power points in the cabins and AC throughout the interior? How fast does the boat go? Is the outdoor area shaded? What recreational equipment is onboard if there’s no surf?

Booking with World Surfaris means we’ve either been on the boat or know it well, and these features and facts are things we’ll talk through when comparing different boats for your group.
