Surf Charters With a Non-Surfing Partner
Thinking about a surf charter with your non-surfing partner?
Here at World Surfaris, our consultants are constantly asked this question daily. Josh from the World Surfaris team recently had to ask himself the same question when he was approached by a group of mates about doing a surf trip to the Maldives with their non-surfing partners!
After much debate over what would be more suitable between a resort or surf charter, a surf charter was chosen.
After deciding on what trip they would do, persuading the girlfriends was the next step. Like most non-surfing partners Josh’s girlfriend Laura was no different and she had her doubts about travelling on what is stereotyped these days as a ‘boys only club’. With little surf experience and knowledge of riding a wave, Laura sheepishly agreed to join Josh on the charter with a group of friends from around the country.
Here is Josh's rendition of what he described as the BEST surf holiday he has ever done!
"I have been very lucky over the years to experience some awesome surf trips all around the world. Many of which were solo get aways or a group of frothing guys ready to surf, eat, sleep, repeat. However I had never gone on a ‘surf trip’ with my non-surfing partner other than to Bali for a few days which was after a surf trip with some mates in Lombok. The idea of a surf charter in the Maldives came to me as being the most economical way I could show my girlfriend the beauty of the Maldives whilst still being able to have a surf with my mates and hang out with her when I wasn’t surfing perfect waves. As most surfers out there would know putting together a surf charter for 10 – 12 of your mates can be a sluggish process and getting people to commit can often be a task in itself. First of all, work commitments are always an issue with any holiday followed by getting permission from 'the boss'. But if you bring the 'boss' with you it can be a different story all together! Keep this in mind next time you plan your surf trip.
Working for World Surfaris, I hear almost every day how guys don’t feel comfortable bringing their wives or girlfriends on board a charter and vice versa with the women thinking they wouldn’t like it.I can now tell you that going on a surf charter with your wife or girlfriend is an absolutely awesome experience and one you would have regretted not doing sooner! The boat of choice for our group was none other than the Manta surf charter. The Manta is a large 14 person surf and dive charter in the Male atolls which features 10 air conditioned rooms with an ensuite, a huge top sunbaking deck, middle level saloon with bar (tap beer keg), bow relaxation/day bed area and a large dining table at the stern perfect for meal time.
Apart from the actual charter, Manta also comes with a small 17ft runabout dinghy and a 60ft support vessel called a dhoni. Having a dhoni can be a huge advantage as a surfer in the Maldives. Firstly it’s a great place to store your boards so they aren’t lying all over the charter getting in the way. Secondly if conditions change at 1 break you can jump in the dhoni and go somewhere else faster than going back to your charter hoisting the anchor and travelling to the next break. In this time the dhoni would have got you to the next break and surfing an hour earlier. Finally it is also good for non-surfers to use as a platform to go snorkelling, SUP'ing or fishing.
A day to day breakdown for the boys is easy. Wake up, surf before breakfast, eat breakfast, surf again before lunch, have lunch, surf again after lunch and then come back for dinner and a few beers. Simple, just the way we like it. For the girls they can wake up, do some yoga on the top deck as the sun rises, have breakfast, read a book on the sundeck, jump in for a swim in crystal clear water, go for a SUP or snorkel at a nearby reef with one of the guides off the charter to support them. Quite often we came back from surfing to find the girls doing one of these activities or cranking the tunes whilst sipping on piña colada under the sun surrounded by clear skies and sheet glass water...It was easy to see why the girls loved it so much!!
Also available in the Maldives for the girls is the opportunity to venture onto Hudhuranfushi Island for a massage or a couple of cocktails. The usual charge is US$20 to get on island and then pay for whatever you spend whilst there. The girls did this for a full day half way through our trip and in their own words “it was the best day ever”. It also worked well for us because we got to surf all day, went fishing and shared a few drinks watching the sunset before we picked the girls up.
This wasn’t just any old surf trip, this was by far the best overall holiday experience I have ever had and I can’t wait to do it all again in 2016!!"
